Mickey-17: Ehhhhhhh

Mickey-17 is approaching a release at home. I saw it opening weekend and I thought it was good.

Not excellent.

The family I took with me hated it.

I can see what Bong Joon-Ho was going for in the movie, but the end result is a discordant mess. I loved Robert Pattinson's performance, but I think back to Brandon Sanderson's lectures on plot, pacing, and progress.

At the beginning of a story, you make implicit and explicit promises to your audience. In this, Bong Joon-Ho made quite a few.

*Explore the nature of cloning and humanity - when do we lose our humanity as we are printed piece by piece? *The conflict of the rich who lead space exploration and those they bring with them who may be exploring for different reasons *The hardships and complexities of frontier and adventure

Instead, the movie took quite a different direction and he failed to deliver on any of the promises. Additionally, he committed the sin of zero character growth with zero plot progress. It was an effective satire with the characters and the humor landed, but no one changed through the course of the film.

Overall, I enjoyed the film, but it failed to live to the performance of Pattinson.
