I've Become The Expert in PowerBI at Work and I Know Nothing - Thanks ChatGPT
Recently, we had some attrition on the team I work on where we lost a data administrator who helped work with PowerBI. He setup gateways, data flows, answered user questions, etc. Since he left, I took up his role helping with that. I've been inundated with questions.
Now, I am no spring chicken when it comes to Microsoft products, especially PowerBI. I've made visuals and worked with the tool - but administered an entire gateway experience across many, many enterprise users - lol no.
And yet, I am now the point person for this tool.
At first, I spent hours researching documentation and trying to work with users individually to solve their problems.
When I was younger, there was a tool people used to send people who started in jobs that constantly asked questions without thinking: lmgtfy. Let Me Google That For You was a tool you tossed the query or question into and it made a big, long obnoxious animation of just entering and searching it into Google for you. The emphasis was supposed to be on a light-hearted way of telling folks, "Hey, before you go asking for help, try Googling it." Now, that still hasn't become ubiquitous for people before submitting tickets, as anyone in IT can see, but it is far more prevalent to expect people to Google something now than it was even ten years ago.
The new lmgtfy has apparently become lmctfy: let me ChatGPT that for you.
What I discovered was the vast majority of the user problems were:
a.) self-solvable by the end user, many of which had the correct permissions b.) extremely solvable by ChatGPT
So, now the workflow becomes this:
-ticket arrives -ticket goes into an enterprise approved LLM -ticket response gets sent back via ServiceNow
80-90% of the time this resolves the issue.
Let me repeat that.
80-90% of issues people are submitting tickets for can be solved by an AI.
This seems to be the new world we are in where for front-line IT work implementing an LLM that can parrot basic debugging is the new killer app. It's a more beautiful world in my opinion since it frees time to work on better value-add work.
So, before slapping that submit ticket button or pinging your admin, let me ask you: have you asked ChatGPT or CoPilot?
